How Fullstack Academy’s Future Code Fellowship Helps New Yorkers Break Into Tech
By The Fullstack Academy Team
Through a partnership with the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline, Fullstack Academy’s Future Code: Diversifying the Future of Web Development in NYC program provides our flagship coding education in our standard immersive programs to eligible New Yorkers free of cost.
At Fullstack Academy, we are passionate about making technology more inclusive and diverse, and the Future Code Fellowship helps us stay true to our mission. Students start with Intro to Coding, work through Bootcamp Prep, and then go through our standard admissions process before being admitted into the program. Once they learn the basics, they learn cutting-edge development technologies that prepare them to accept roles at top-tier companies.
The Future Code Fellowship Curriculum
Intro to Code
Before starting the immersive, all Future Code Fellowship students start in our Intro to Code course, where they learn the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, creating a few small projects along the way. Students in Intro to Coding get a sense for whether coding is right for them and are better prepared for Bootcamp Prep.
Bootcamp Prep
After completing Intro to Code, students spend four weeks working through our Bootcamp Prep course to learn how to define and write code using the fundamentals of HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript.
The course includes lectures, workshops, pair programming, coding challenges, and a culminating project—many of the same elements students will find in the immersive program. In addition, students will test into the full-time phase of the program following a technical interview with our admissions team. Performance on this interview and throughout the course determines whether or not students are invited for continued enrollment in the remainder of the program.
Foundations
If students are chosen to continue in the program, they start Foundations, a six-week segment that aims to get all accepted cohort students to the same level of understanding before advancing them to the core curriculum phase of the program. After completing Foundations, students have a firm grasp on the more advanced areas of JavaScript—plus they’ll have built their first Node.js application.
Core Curriculum + the Project Phase
The next thirteen weeks are spent in the core curriculum phase. Students master both front-end and back-end technologies and learn how to build their own SQL database engine and how to integrate it into their applications. From there, they work on a guided group project, a personal project, and a culminating capstone project.
The Flight Program
The final phase of Fullstack’s Future Code Fellowship is the Flight Program. During the Flight Program, Future Code Fellowship students receive guidance and mentorship from Fullstack Academy’s career success team. They check in with students one-on-one, run mock interviews, help with negotiations during the hiring process, and keep students feeling motivated and supported.
