Study: Most Common Fully Remote Jobs

    By The Fullstack Academy Team

    Most common remote jobs 2025

For many Americans, working in the office is a thing of the past. While not all industries have the ability to work remotely, many companies around the world have embraced this shift.

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, industries that do not require much physical labor or those that handle customer service tasks, are more likely to work remotely. For example, the information and finance sectors are both industries that have the ability to benefit from working from home—and many in this field have done so, with less than 30% of workers fully on-site.

As leaders in online tech bootcamp education, we at Fullstack Academy wanted to learn more about specific jobs available across the country that are fully remote. To do this, we collected data from 62,000 job posts on Indeed and analyzed each post to determine the most common remote jobs, the highest paying remote jobs, the companies hiring the most remote workers, and more. Read on to learn more about our findings.

    Key Takeaways

    • Virginia, Maryland, and Colorado are home to the most remote jobs per capita.

    • Accenture and Marsh McLennan Agency are the top two companies currently hiring the most remote workers.

While the location of a remote job listing does not typically matter to the person applying, we wanted to know which states are contributing the most to these work-from-home opportunities. To find this information, we calculated the total number of jobs by state and then divided that by the state’s population to determine the number of jobs per capita.

Leading the way with the most fully remote job listings is Virginia. Home to many companies’ headquarters like CarMax and Capital One, we discovered more than 1,000 remote job listings in the state. Among those postings, we found an enterprise account executive position, a contracts administrator role, and more.

Moving north, we find our second-place state, Maryland, where GEICO, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Pearson are just three of the many companies headquartered in the state. Of the more than 600 listings, we found companies searching for customer service representatives, programmers, project managers, and more. Up next, we shift further west to Colorado in third place for the most remote jobs per capita, followed by Arizona in fourth place.

In addition to the most common remote jobs overall, we wanted to learn which positions are the most uniquely prevalent in each state compared to their corresponding national ranking. To do this, we looked at which of the 25 most common remote jobs posted nationally are most highly represented in a given state compared to the national average. Overall, a sales representative is the most uniquely prevalent remote job at the state level. This is followed by a software developer in second place and account managers in third place for the most uniquely prevalent job by state.

To wrap up our study, we decided to turn our attention to the companies with the most listings for remote jobs. Up first with more than 600 listings on Indeed is Accenture, a business management consultant with its U.S. headquarters located in Chicago, IL. Founded in 1989, Accenture has nearly 800,000 employees worldwide, with remote job listings for an analytics advisory associate manager, a GenAI application lead, an investment accounting team lead, and more.

In second place with 540 job listings is Marsh McLennan Agency, an insurance company that provides business insurance, private client insurance solutions, and more. Across the U.S., Marsh McLennan Agency has 300 offices and is headquartered in New York, NY. Some of the remote job titles listed by the company include a senior finance data analyst, a technology organization specialist, and a senior platform engineer.

Up next is Optum in third place, which specializes in providing healthcare and services to individuals while focusing on ensuring positive experiences and lower costs. With more than 300 job postings for the company, you can find many remote positions available from a sales account manager to a care team associate.

As shown in this study, many companies are continuing to utilize remote workers. For some, this may be to reduce the costs of operating a physical office space or to reach a larger candidate pool, but for many organizations, the decision to offer fully remote careers is one that is made to benefit both the company and its employees.

Experts all around the world have reported on the benefits of remote work, from enhanced team morale and reduced turnover to higher profits and improved work-life balance. While not all companies have made the switch, many jobs can be completed from home.

Recently, however, many companies have begun the transition from remote or hybrid work to in-person work once again. In 2024, some companies issued return-to-office mandates, leading to workers searching for new jobs.

While the RTO initiative has picked up steam across a variety of industries, reports show that only 3% of tech companies with 500 employees or less are in the office full-time. So if you have a desire to remain a remote worker, a career switch to the tech industry could offer the most opportunity.

    Methodology

In this study, we analyzed 62,662 jobs listed on Indeed as of December 9, 2024. All jobs included in our analysis were listed as full-time and fully remote, spanning every industry, experience level, education level, and compensation level represented on Indeed.

Our conclusions about job titles most commonly advertised as fully remote are based on some standardization of job titles. The raw data included 3,551 unique job titles. Of those, 1,075 were represented in more than 10 unique job posts. We ultimately chose to report the 100 most common job titles that are clear and in many cases consolidate a larger group of similar titles. Some titles were excluded for being too generic (e.g. manager, director, team lead), and others were consolidated into one parent code (e.g. sales representative, business development manager, and sales associate all consolidated to sales representative).

The most uniquely prevalent remote jobs in each state are based on which jobs, among the 25 most common remote jobs posted nationally, are most highly represented in a given state when compared to the national average.
