Introducing One Fullstack, Fullstack Academy's Employee Resource Group

      By The Fullstack Academy Team

      One Fullstack Blog

Officially founded in 2022, One Fullstack is an Employee Resource Group (ERG) for Fullstack Academy employees. Its inception centers on an internal push for increased visibility, action, and measurable progress surrounding existing DEI initiatives—as well as a platform for raising new ones.

But what exactly is an employee resource group, and how does One Fullstack plan to spark a meaningful difference within the Fullstack Academy ecosystem and tech education at large? Read on to learn more about who we are and what we do, plus our vision and mission for 2023 and beyond.

The What and Why of Employee Resource Groups

At its core, an Employee Resource Group provides an organization’s staff with services and resources designed to optimize workers’ experience. The role and function of an ERG can vary significantly by organization, but their overall goal is often the same: to foster a diverse, inclusive workspace.

Unlike departments with a defined function, like HR or Executive Leadership, an ERG is voluntary, employee-facilitated, and member-led. Employee resource groups organize a number of initiatives from education and entertainment to company-wide policy change advocacy—all built around the specific needs of an organization’s staff.

ERGs are common in the tech industry and beyond, and offer numerous benefits to both employees and employers. They’re found in over 90% of Fortune 500 companies—a significant number of which, perhaps unsurprisingly, are also consistently rated by employees as some of the best places to work.

Stemming from the efforts of Civil Rights era Black professionals to combat discrimination and other racist practices in the workplace, ERGs are an essential part of building and maintaining a more equitable workforce, particularly for underrepresented and underserved communities. One Fullstack aims to continue this legacy with continually evolving resources, education, and other employee needs-based initiatives.

      About One Fullstack

As a fully remote company, Fullstack Academy staff rely primarily on virtual communication channels. This often allows us to collaborate on projects more efficiently and effectively than we would be able to in person, but it can also limit our perception—both of each other and the organization at large.

That’s where One Fullstack comes in to:

      • Increase awareness and visibility

      • Promote openness and transparency

      • Build, celebrate, and support a diverse remote workforce

      • Foster a feeling of community and belonging for all Fullstaffers

      The One Fullstack Vision

One Fullstack envisions sparking a difference within Fullstack Academy by researching and recommending solutions to increase diversity representation, raise visibility, and provide opportunities to develop leadership skills and broaden networks.

      The One Fullstack Mission

One Fullstack’s mission is to celebrate a culture of DEI to foster belonging, build awareness and appreciation for diversity through cultural events, share research-based knowledge, and encourage open dialogue with senior leadership to address issues and policies.
